EcoTuesday: The Role of Open Source Techology in Global Sustainability

Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:30 pm

Sir Francis Drake Hotel, San Francisco.

The EcoTuesday event will feature Scott Mattoon of Architecture for Humanity, a nonprofit design services firm building a more sustainable world by providing free professional design services to a broad range of global clients.

Architecture for Humanity was founded in 1999 and now has 72 chapters in 14 countries around the world. Through its global network of 40,000 design, development and construction professionals with local expertise and knowledge, Architecture for Humanity brings sustainable design, construction and development services where they are most needed, from sub-Saharan Africa to post-Katrina New Orleans. Each year 10,000 people directly benefit from structures designed by the firm.

As a student of sustainability, Scott will discuss how “open source” architecture weaves ecological impact awareness, energy analysis, and long term thinking creates lasting change in communities by:

  • Alleviating poverty and providing access to water, sanitation, power and essential services
  • Bringing safe shelter to communities prone to disaster and displaced populations
  • Rebuilding community and creating neutral spaces for dialogue in post-conflict areas
  • Mitigating the effects of rapid urbanization in unplanned settlements
  • Creating spaces to meet the needs of those with disabilities and other at-risk populations
  • Reducing the footprint of the built environment and addressing climate change

"The land we bought was literally ‘the site from hell.’ Architecture for Humanity's design fellow managed to design classrooms that we will be able to replicate on any site. I really think it could be the best built school in rural Uganda."

– Carol Auld, Kutamba AIDS Orphans School, Bikongozo, Uganda

Scott is the technical liaison for Sun to the TED community, and serves as lead systems architect for Sun's support of TED prize winners Cameron Sinclair, Neil Turok and Bill Clinton.  In addition to his time at Sun, Scott's career has spanned several leadership positions with companies helping to shape business and society on the Internet including 4charity.com, Live365.com, Cybersource, and NeXT.  Scott blogs about open source and sustainable business at http://blogs.sun.com/downstream/.

Scott will talk about 'The Role of Open Source Technology in Sustainability' at EcoTuesday, an event which usually draws between 80 and 100 participants each month.

The event will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:30 pm at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco. Please RSVP at www.ecotuesday.com/events.
