Now, I'm not a cat person, sorry...but I used to have one and remember the sheer volume of cat litter that we threw into the trash every week. Saw this article in Sierra Club's newsletter and wanted to share Mr. Green's opinion on the "greenest" kitty litter options today.
"The greenest cat litter is made of recycled paper, followed by sawdust, wheat chaff, oat hulls or other biological materials. But more than half the litter in the US is made of bentonite - a stripmined clay that leads right to Dick Cheney, which may explain why he raked around in Iraq like it was his personal litter box. Halliburton, where Cheney was CEO, produces about one-sixth of the 3 million tons of bentonite sold each year, of which 1.7 million tons go into cat litter. Quite a waste of a substance that can be used in iron smelting, environmental cleanup, and wine clarifying."

There's a recycled paper litter called Yesterday's News. Having tried it, I can tell you it not very effective. Yes it absorbs, but unless they've xhanged the formula in the past couple of years, there's no odor control agent and it can't be scooped. Like old fashioned clay litter, the entire box needs to be changed at once.
... American Colloid Company is the largest producer of cat liter as far as i know at this point, they also produce clay liter, but it is oin a much larger volume that Halliburton. They have 1 plant that I know of that is probably 95% dedicated to this process. Just thought I would let you know.... THe halliburton info was a little misleading...
