Established in 1995, the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver's Built Green program is one of the oldest built green programs in the country. Designed to encourage home builders to implement the use of technologies, products and building practices that produce a home that is not only better for the environment but is also built better.
The Built Green program has grown immensely over the last 15 years. The program now has more than 220 member builders who have built more than 36,000 green homes throughout the state. In 2003 Built Green Colorado was voted the nation's premier green building program by the National Association of Home Builders Research Center.
Designed as a voluntary industry driven program, Built Green Colorado has gone to great lengths to simplify their certification process. A builder needs only to chose from 180 items in 22 different categories, ranging from sustainability to indoor air quality, giving them great flexibility in achieving certification. It is in part due to this flexibility, that the program has created such a loyal and growing membership.
In upcoming columns I will profile some of the more prominent Built Green member builders along the Front Range.
