Maya Lin - Unchopping a Tree from What is Missing? Foundation on Vimeo.
Architect and artist Maya Lin, who designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., recently unveiled a short film, "Unchopping a Tree," at the United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen.
Her multimedia piece features music by Brian Eno and belongs to to her latest memorial, What is Missing?,
In her own words, "[What is Missing?] is a memorial that exists not as a single, stationary monument, but that exists in several mediums and places simultaneously."
The memorial is, in fact, an interactive project that presents a call to action to protect the natural world before it's too late. As an element of this, the film "Unchopping a Tree" dramatically but beautifully shows the damage that deforestation is creating worldwide. "If deforestation were happening in your city, how quickly would you work to stop it?" the video asks.
You can find more information about this film, about the What is Missing? memorial, and the What is Missing? foundation at the preliminary site for the project, which will launch fully on Earth day in 2010 but is already full of information.
Maya Lin, artist, created the What is Missing? Foundation in 2003 to fund her last memorial project, What is Missing?. A committed environmentalist, Lin has consistently focused on environmental concerns throughout her career, promoting sustainable building design in her architectural works, while making the environment the subject of her artworks. She is deeply committed to focusing attention back to the environment and to ask us to pay closer attention to the natural world. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Natural Resources Defense Council and is a former member of the Energy Foundation. She is represented by PaceWildenstein in New York City.
