In an earlier report in this series, we mentioned that the Filoli mansion and gardens were the backdrop for the hit TV series Dynasty, and the Warren Beatty movie Heaven Can Wait.
Inspired by this year’s Academy Awards Show, we decided to do a little digging to find out what other movies were filmed at Filoli, and if any had won Academy Awards.
It turns out that there were two Academy Award nominated movies filmed on the site. In 1978,
Heaven Can Wait was nominated for nine Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor (Warren Beatty), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Warden), Best Supporting Actress (Dyan Cannon), and Best Director, Art Direction, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, and Cinematography. It won Best Art Direction.
The other Academy nominee was Stanley Kubrick’s controversial 1962 classic “
Lolita,” which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, but did not win. However, Sue Lyon, who played in the starring role, did win a Golden Globe Award for
Most Promising Newcomer.
We also discovered that the following movie productions were shot on location at Filoli:

That’s a diverse line up of movies, and chances are you have seen one or more of them.
Curator Tom Rogers told us, “We don’t seek out film production companies, but Filoli is such a good fit for so many movie plots requiring magnificent homes and gardens that they (film companies) naturally gravitate to our location."

Based on the beauty and history of the stately mansion and grounds, it’s easy to see why film producers and directors would covet Filoli.
The next time you pay a visit; see if you recognize any scenes from the movies mentioned above.

I visited this wonderful place last week. Thank you for making us aware of its existence.
I'd be singing "I'll be home for Christmas" if I lived there. Wow, what a place.
Actually, it was the 1997 remake of Lolita that had scenes filmed at Filoli.
