Comic recommendations for the week of Nov. 11:
BATMAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL #1 (DC)
The opening salvo of DC's new noir-infused "First Wave" line. Masterminded by 100 Bullets writer Brian Azzarello, the First Wave universe is populated by denizens of the pulps like Doc Savage, pulp-influenced characters like The Spirit and non-superpowered DC heroes like Batman and Wildcat. Set during the 1940s, this one-shot introduces us to the world via the first meeting between the Man of Bronze and the Dark Knight Detective. Batman/Doc Savage will be followed up by a miniseries entitled, appropriately, First Wave, which will delve further into the universe Azzarello is assembling. Phil Noto supplies the art, while J.G. Jones provides the cover.
PUNISHER MAX #1 (Marvel/Max)
The Punisher's mature readers title returns with its second volume and a new creative team. Scalped writer Jason Aaron, no stranger to crime fiction, makes his Frank Castle ongoing debut; joining him on pencilling duties is Steve Dillon, who drew the majority of the Punisher Marvel Knights series that was published earlier this decade. Unlike the previous Max series, Vol. 2 will integrate more characters from the Marvel Universe proper; both The Kingpin and Bullseye will be making appearances, as well as Nick Fury. But even with these additions, the series will remain true to the gritty real-world aesthetic established in the previous volume.
THE AUTHORITY: THE LOST YEAR READER (DC/Wildstorm)
Way back in 2006, writer Grant Morrison and artist Gene Ha (Top Ten) launched a new series starring Wildstorm's premier purveyors of ultraviolence, The Authority. A couple of months later issue two was published...and then nothing. Supposedly, Morrison's duties as the new architect of the DC Universe coupled with the negative reviews of #1 and a change in editorial all contributed to the series' limbo status. Until now. Veteran writer Keith Giffen has been drafted in to complete the twelve issue serial based on Morrison's outline, and will be joined by The Boys' Darick Robertson on art duties. This one-shot collects the two issues completed by Morrison and Ha and is being sold at a discounted price, just in time to get readers up to speed before #3's release.
SUPERGOD #1 (of 5) (Avatar)
Usually I try to write my own synopses, but the description of Supergod #1 on Avatar Press' website pretty much takes the cake:
"Take every superhero comic ever published, shove them into a nuclear-powered blender, soak it in bad vodka and set the whole thing alight — and SUPERGOD will crawl out and eat your brain!"
So yeah. By Warren Ellis. Buy it.
