2010 Grammy Awards: Song of the Year nominees
(Nomination awarded to songwriters.)
•Single Ladies, Beyonce, Thaddis Harrell, Terius Nash & Christopher Stewart
•Pretty Wings, Hod David & Musze
•Use Somebody, Kings of Leon
•Poker Face, Lady Gaga & RedOne
•You Belong With Me, Taylor Swift & Liz Rose
The analysis for Song of the Year at the 2010 Grammy Awards isn't much different than the analysis for Record of the Year. That's because four of the five artists are the same.
In the race for Song of the Year, which is awarded to the songwriters instead of the artist (see: "What's the difference between Record and Song of the Year?"), Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" is again one of the favorites.
Things get interesting because of the inclusion of "Pretty Wings" by Maxwell, who is not a nominee for Record of the Year. Since Maxwell and Beyonce both work in the field of R&B, they will pull some votes away from each other, meaning that neither is likely to triumph here.
Lady Gaga had a terrific year, but "Poker Face" was, by my estimation, only her fourth-best song of 2009 (behind "Just Dance," "Paparazzi" and "Bad Romance.") Quite simply, there is no way the Academy gives the Song of the Year trophy to a tune with the lyric "I'm bluffin' with my muffin."
That leaves rock band Kings of Leon as Swift's main challenger. The buzz has been building in recent days that "Use Somebody" could sweep Record and Song of the Year. It's an undeniably solid rock song and the band seems likable enough. If voters are even the slightest bit weary of Taylor Swift, they could look in Kings of Leon's direction.
Logic tells me Taylor Swift is the favorite here, especially since rock songs don't often take this award. I would not at all be surprised to see Kings of Leon win, but I'll stick with conventional wisdom and predict Taylor Swift to take this one by a hair.
