Sharpton snubs Cuomo -- sort of endorses Charles Barron

Former Democratic presidential candidate Rev. Al Sharpton won’t be voting for his Party’s candidate in Tuesday’s gubernatorial election, examiner.com has learned.

A handout from Charles Barron’s “Freedom Party” this morning said that Sharpton had endorsed the New York City Councilman in his bid to be the state’s chief executive, an assertion that the candidate himself refuted.

“He said he’s voting for me, but he can’t support me,” Barron told this reporter.  “We accept his vote -- that is a loud message to our people.  He wants to get across that he’s voting for Charles Barron and he probably wants others to follow suit.  If that’s the best way he can say it for now that’s what we accept and we’re moving on.”

Barron, who identifies himself as “a Black Panther” is running on a platform of providing more support and funding to inner-city communities, one similar to that of Sharpton’s during his 2004 presidential run.

A Sharpton spokeswoman did not return repeated calls and e-mails seeking comment for this story.

Barron said that the ultimate victory would be for him to be elected governor.

“I’m in it to win it,” said Barron.

However getting 50,000 votes, the requisite number to become a recognized party by the state "would certainly be a significant victory," according to Barron.

Examiner.com will continue to provide comprehensive coverage of the 2010 elections.
