New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg this morning received the endorsement of Rep. Gary Ackerman (D - Queens/Nassau), the second Democratic member of Congress in as many weeks to cross party lines and back the Mayor, who is running for a third term on the Republican Party line.
"The security of our city, and its economic viability as the heart of our nation’s economy in these perilous times, has caused me to conclude that Mayor Bloomberg's leadership is essential,” said Congressman Ackerman. “I enthusiastically endorse his re-election."
The Congressman will serve as a key surrogate for the Mayor, the campaign said.
Last week Bloomberg won the endorsement of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D - Nassau). The Long Island Congresswoman was elected to Congress shortly after her husband was shot and killed when a deranged man opened fire on the Long Island Railroad. McCarthy said that she was supporting the mayor because of his strong record of reducing crime and advocating for greater gun control laws.
