A green flag with a green star? What flag is on Google's logo today? Those questions seem to be on the minds of many in the wake of Google's latest logo doodle.

Google's logo doodle today pays tribute to the 150th birthday of L.L. Zamenhof.

Zamenhof is the inventor of the Esperanto language, which Zamenhof designed for international communication. Esperanto is still used today though it hasn't been officially adopted by any countries.

Today's Google doodle incorporates the green flag and green star of Esperanto.

Google's doodles always attract a lot of attention on the Web, and today is no exception. Search traffic for Zamenhof and Esperanto have been trending topics today.

But a lot of people just want to know whose green flag with green star Google has up today. The answer is Esperanto.

Here are some notes on the flag from the Esperanto Wikipedia page:

Irishman Richard Geoghegan, author of the first Esperanto textbook for English speakers, proposed the flag to Zamenhof in 1887. It was approved in 1905. A second design for the flag was released in 1987 to mark the 100th anniversary of the language.

I'm a British citizen, and this is my flag.

Esperanto works! I’ve used it in speech and writing - and sung in it - in about fifteen countries over recent years.

Indeed, the language has some remarkable practical benefits. Personally, I’ve made friends around the world through Esperanto that I would never have been able to communicate with otherwise. And then there’s the Pasporta Servo, which provides free lodging and local information to Esperanto-speaking travellers in over 90 countries. In the past few years I have had guided tours of Berlin and Milan and Douala in Cameroon in the planned language. I have discussed philosophy with a Slovene poet, humour on television with a Bulgarian TV producer. I’ve discussed what life was like in East Berlin before the wall came down, how to cook perfect spaghetti, the advantages and disadvantages of monarchy, and so on.

If you're interested in the wider world, Esperanto is for you!

I thought this might be some inane environmental chicken little "sky is falling" flag. That would be dangerous.
Glad to hear it's something as silly as esperanto flag. (But what is next? An 'ebonics' flag???)

Carol, I think that your post has nothing to do with the topic. The flag is not the flag of any nation. It is a flag that flies over a community of people who speak a language that was designed to break language barriers to promote peace. It represents exactly the opposite of the support of any group of troops over another.

Carol, you represent the closed mindedness of so many Americans completely blind to anything out side of the States. While your intentions aren't bad... neither is Google's. Learn to see outside your tunnel that is blocking your vision. There is a world out there that exists beyond America's border.

Every day I wake up and learn something new about the world. Most of the things I learn are usually negitive and narrow minded because of the source. Then because of the internet and especially today, Google, I have learned that there is a whole langauage that is for everyone. I think this is very interesting.....

How about a BILL OF RIGHTS ICON on the Google home page?

Today is "BILL OF RIGHT'S DAY". It is one of the MOST IMPORTANT documents in all of HUMAN HISTORY. Please don't offer up the lame "we have world wide "customers" who may be offended" excuse, because if EVERY COUNTRY had a TRULY ENFORCED "BILL OR RIGHTS", ALL of humanity would be FREE and PROPEROUS, not mostly enslaved by their own RULERS...

    Comprende', Sergey???

It just disappoints me how Google chooses to recognize obscure people. Or should I say that being Jewish is what makes it on the homepage? And what about Feb. 12 2009 when Google chose to celebrate the controversial Darwin over Abraham Lincoln--who actually benefitted the progress of our nation.

Well. I have to laugh at Carols responses! Sometimes it's really humiliating being from America, don't get me wrong, I love my country, but the way our president acts and the stupid things that people say who are so narrow minded really makes us look like a bunch of idiots sometimes. I feel like apologizing. Not everyone in America is so arrogant or uneducated in foreign affairs. I think the green flag makes a lot of sense and Is a great symbol of unity. I myself have never heard of this language until now so what a great idea for google to use this. Thank you for letting me vent. :P

Shut up and search the web for me Google! I don't need your social commentary, or your solidarity movements, or your one-world "global governance" b/s. You have a good product, stop trying to be big brother, savy!?!
