Gmail account disabled? You are not alone - 150K Gmail accounts disabled

You weren't dreaming on Sunday when you tried to log into your Gmail account and everything went blank. As many as 150,000 Gmail users lost their emails, Google chat logs and attachments as a result of what Google indicates is a glitch.

Will all of the emails that were lost be recovered? That's not certain yet. The latest status posted on the Google Apps (415 pm on Monday, Feb 28) dashboard on Google.com states:

Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users within the next 10 hours. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change. The remaining 0.012% of accounts are being restored on an ongoing basis.

Earlier in the evening, the update stated that the Gmail outage affects "less than 0.08% of the Google Mail userbase. This is a revised estimate ... Affected users may be temporarily unable to sign in while we repair their accounts."

If Google is your only email account and you're part of the 0.08% of users, then it's safe to say that right now you're screwed if you really need to read your email.

There are some not-so-happy campers over on the Gmail Help Forum.

Comments including, "I have lost ALL my emails/folders etc from gmail. Why would this happen? How can I restore everything?" and "Everything from 6 years gone. Contact list is fine, but all communications have been deleted" flood the help page.

There are a few standard replies from Google Employee Gmail Specialists on the forum including, "We're looking into this issue right now. I know how important your messages are to you. Thanks for reporting on the forum."

A solution? There is an app in the Google Apps Marketplace called Gmail Backup, but the feedback on the app isn't all that positive - and it won't help you if your email is already one of those that is currently defunct.

ETA for fixing this bug for the 150,000 or so people who can't get into their Gmail? You may want to check in on the Google Apps Status board from time to time. It has the latest news on the disabling of some Gmail accounts.

I am mixed race english/jamaican...A white male on -Bla'ckw'hi'teCu'pid. ℃○M- who viewed my profile (at least 8 times!!), had on his profile in capitals 'NO BLACKS', and in the part where it asks 'what makes you sad?' he'd put...'when black women contact me'!....lol.....I just thought 'why do you keep looking at my profile?' He must have thought the more he looked at me, the paler i might become!!! HaHaHa :)

I'm freaking out. I'm "part of the 0.08% of users, then it's safe to say that right now I'm screwed"

    This is unreal!

  • Ack. That is NOT good. I recall about 5 years ago when a similar situation happened and my email acct was part of the outage. It's frustrating at best...and the canned Google responses are not reassuring.

I hope to get my data back. I have Everything - personal information and work related docs and correspondences. It is frustrating indeed

I am one of the lucky 150k. Login to gmail or google docs goes straight to a help article explaining Disabled Account.
I would hate to think years of info are gone.

I, too, lost my Gmail account. Not one, but two accounts. All of my saved emails are gone and I have many attachments that I keep in my email because I thought it was safe storage. Gone.

Where the hell did the stuff go? I thought it was stored on servers.

I hope that this is fixed soon as I run my work through that account and do not want to create a new account for the old one to be re-instated later today

Same for me :( make me think about the risk having all data online... Google should provide a way to download all data to disk. Beside having a backup, it would make it possible to read emails while being offline...

REALLY REALLY annoying. I can't win anything, but when there's a .08% chance of THIS happening to me- I'm chosen. Go figure.

Using apps, my email shows Disabled due to Abuse. Is this part of the same issue going on? There is no reason this account should be marked for abuse.

Not sure if some are getting that "Abuse" notice but mine is just locked. Keep putting password in and nothing. This is crazy.

    my account was disabled:

GMail, Google Apps, Adwords (the big one - I have credit card info with Google!), Android phone sync, contacts, past e-mail (including tax info, password/user information, hotel reservations, etc.) - pretty much everything. If this gets resolved (which I doubt), I will definitely not trust Google for anything again.

Hard lesson learned - Google can, at will, do whatever they please without warning or recourse. I MAY take them to small claims court over the AdWords stuff, though...

Just curious - how did you know that your account was working again? Seems like you'd have to just keep trying to log into the account until it works, unless Gmail is sending emails to alternate email accounts to alert users their accounts are back up again...

There are still a lot of users out there who don't have access back yet. (Myself included.) I am one of .02% of MILLIONS of Gmail users who lost access to their account. Why couldn't I have those odds playing the lottery? :)

my account last night said "account disabled possibly for abuse"--which scared the hell out of me... i thought someone hacked my account & sent out spam or something!

    UPDATE:
now when trying to log on it says: "We are currently working on your account because an error occurred with your mail storage. Your account data and messages are safe. However, you won’t be able to log in until our team is finished.

We can’t predict exactly how long this will take, but if you are still unable to access your account in 48 hours, please contact us with your username at gmail-maintenance@google.com . We apologize for the disruption."

  • Somewhat reassuring to hear that the data is safe....hope your acct is back up and running soon. Thanks for the update!

This is why I keep physical backups of everything I need. I come from the generation that writes the most important information down, and I don't keep every freakin email I have ever received. My data is on multiple externals in multiple locations, and I backup to more than one cloud service. Anyone who says all of this costs money will lose more money when everything they have stored on Gmail is lost. NEVER rely on one service to store all of your data. Blame yourself, not Google.
