Phil Mickelson's mother diagnosed with breast cancer

Less than 2 months ago Phil Mickelson and his family began an emotional roller coaster after learning that Phil's wife Amy had breast cancer.  Last week the bad news struck again.  Now Phil's mother Mary has also been diagnosed with the same cancer.  She is expected to have surgery Friday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the same hospital that Amy has had surgery and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Phil's sister Tina reported the news to the San Diego Union-Tribune.  Tina told the paper that she wished for the news of her mother to be made known so that Mary could receive the same prayers and support that Amy did from the players and fans of the PGA Tour.

Mary still lives in the same San Diego home that she raised Phil and his 2 siblings.  In 1998 she was honored as the Mother of the Year by the San Diego Chapter of the March of Dimes.  Mary was quoted saying "I don't know if I've done anything extra than other mothers. We've always been very involved and have just been there."

The Mickelson Family has appreciated all of the love and support that they have received for Amy and they hope that same support will continue to help them through these hard times.  Let us all be thoughtful and remember them in our prayers.  We wish you and your family the best of luck during these hard times.

Phil himself has not made any public comments since the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black a couple weeks ago.  Phil has already announced that he likely will not participate in the upcoming British Open and with the current situation he will almost certainly not play.
