After day 1 of the Senior US Open the top of the leaderboard is getting crowded. Course conditions were great and that showed in the scores.
There is a 4-way tie for first place with Tim Jackson, Dan Forsman, Joey Sindelar and Greg Norman. Each matched the course record with a 6-under par 66 for the day.
If your not familiar with Tim Jackson that is most likely because 2009 is his first Senior US Open, and he qualified as an amateur. Not only did Jackson tie the course record but he also set a new record with the lowest score in a Senior Open by 2 strokes. Jackson said “The conditions can change, obviously, but the way the course was playing, I thought it played fairly short.”
Also grabbing a lot of attention on day one was Australia's Greg Norman. He is always a fan favorite. Norman almost had the lead to himself at 7-under until he had a few bad shots and bogied #18. Norman said ``I played well today and the golf course was ready to be had. It was perfect conditions.'' Norman also talked about his game coming together saying ``I feel like I'm getting close,'' Norman said. ``Even though I played very, very well today, I feel like I'm getting close to getting it all together.''
Tom Watson who has had his share of the spot-light lately was relatively quite today. Due to illness he only played one practice round before the open and in day 1 he shot a 1-under par 71.
