Michelle Wie jumped out to a fast start in the first round of the LPGA's final Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill's River Course in Williamsburg, Va. Wie birdied her first two holes, both par-4s, and has made the turn tied for the lead at -3.
Wie started on the back nine and had four birdies and a bogey. She is tied for the lead with Cristie Kerr and Hye Jung Choi, who both started on the front nine.
The Stanford sophomore finished 12th at Kingsmill in 2004 and she is is currently 22nd on the money list with $142,756, and ranks second in the Rookie of the Year race, behind Jiyai Shin. The sophomore at Stanford, now 19, has not won a tournament since she was 13, the U.S. Women's Amateur Publinx.
The field for this event is packed with 9 of the top 10 in the world rankings, including the world's top-ranked Lorena Ochoa, and 17 of the top 20.
There are 12 other players tied at -2.
Rain is expected all day, and at some times it is expected to be heavy, with hail and high winds. Some of the players who tee off later in the day may not be able to finish.
