USA triumphs in the Presidents Cup; looking ahead

The American squad turned what looked to be a close match into a romp over the course of Saturday and Sunday, capturing the 2009 Presidents Cup by five points, 19.5-14.5. Tiger Woods capped off a perfect campaign by exacting revenge on Y.E. Yang in their singles match, which officially secured the Cup for the Americans.
In the wake of his 5&3 singles victory over Robert Allenby, Anthony Kim faced some criticism by the Aussie, who accused him of partying late at night during the event instead of keeping more regular hours. After American captain Fred Couples denied the rumor and emphasized Kim’s displeasure at the accusation, Allenby apologized to his American counterpart, all but guaranteeing that the two will face off at Royal Melbourne in two years’ time, should they make their respective Presidents Cup teams again.

Now the PGA Tour turns back toward the Fall Series, with the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open being held at Las Vegas’ TPC Summerlin this Thursday through Sunday. The course was rated the second easiest on Tour last year, so expect to see plenty of birdies. Marc Turnesa captured his first career PGA Tour victory at Summerlin last year at a blistering 30-under par. Four players from the Presidents Cup—Tim Clark, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, and Hunter Mahan—will be competing this week, meaning there is a good amount of star power for such a late-season event. Coverage can be seen on the Golf Channel all four days, from 4-7PM ET.
