November 29 -- With police agencies planning to interview Tiger Woods and release 911 tapes today about his Friday morning car accident, the Wall Street Journal reports that a neighbor -- not Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren -- called police to report the incident.
The sound of a crash at 2:28 Friday morning reportedly woke up an unidentified Woods’ neighbor, who called 911, a spokesperson for the Orange County sheriff’s office told the Journal. The neighbor left his home and spied a “visibly injured” Woods lying on the ground, Jim Solomons of the sheriff’s office said to the Journal.
According to the 911 tape, the neighbor “wanted help” for “a man on the ground,” says the Journal, which cite the 911 recording transcript as indicating that a prone Woods “appeared to be unconscious but breathing.”
Just one call. The Florida Highway Patrol told Internet gossip site TMZ.com that only one call came in about the increasingly mysterious incident that left Woods dazed and bleeding on the street outside his Windermere, FL, home the morning after Thanksgiving.
Investigators from several police departments want information from Woods and his wife about the incident. Woods crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a nearby fire hydrant and tree as he pulled out of his driveway Friday morning.
Nordegren told police at the scene that she used a golf club to smash in the rear window of the SUV to try to pull Woods from the vehicle. Multiple reports have speculated, however, that an argument about an affair Woods allegedly had may have sparked a domestic dispute, leading to the car crash.
Questions remain. Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor told the Journal that his officers found Woods lying on the ground with his wife beside him. The officer tending to Woods saw broken glass from the SUV window and questioned Nordegren about it.
"She said, 'I had to take a golf club and break the window to get him out,'" the police chief told the Journal. Saylor said the rear window was broken but it was unclear how Nordegren could have pulled her six-foot, one-inch, 185-pound husband through it.
Third time’s a charm. Woods, for his part, has so far chosen to divulge no details about his early-morning car accident and has reportedly twice sent away police officers seeking answers to their pending investigation.
"The Florida Highway Patrol has received information that Tiger Woods and his wife were not available to be interviewed by state troopers, as we had previously scheduled," Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol, told the Journal. "Troopers were asked to return tomorrow [November 29th]."
Police officers will reportedly meet with Woods at 3 p.m. Eastern time Sunday afternoon.
Moving violation? Police could charge Woods with a violation such as driving without a seat belt, although they have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash.
Meanwhile, inquiring minds want to know whether Nordegren may have hit Woods’ car with the golf club and/or caused some of his injuries. The sheriff’s office could shed no light on that aspect of the story.
"I've not got even the slightest information that the Woodses were in any kind of a tiff," Solomons told the Journal.
The world’s top-ranked golfer, Woods is the face of the PGA Tour and almost single-handedly responsible for huge TV ratings, tournament ticket sales, and worldwide interest in the game from non-golf fans. Just ask the throngs of Tiger-crazed spectators who recently watched his every move in China and Australia.
Indeed, the average number of TV viewers for golf tournaments in which an injured Woods did not tee it up dropped last year some 47 percent compared with the year before, according to The Nielson Co.
Most immediately, the New York Times reports that Woods will hold a scheduled press conference Tuesday to kick off the Chevron World Challenge, an annual golf tournament that Woods hosts and participates in as a player.
As the details of this tale continue to trickle out, it's clear what really happened. Read about how Tiger Woods was rushing out for pre-Cyber Monday deals on golf clubs.
