Stephen Jackson signed a three-year contract extension with the Warriors on Monday.
Now is not the time to question the strategy of that move. Now's the time to tip your cap to Jackson.
He sat down and talked for a few minutes or so after practice and I shot this video of him.
Hey, I'm new at this, so I apologize for the fuzz. Jackson just couldn't stop himself from taking a shot at the Spurs, either.
And I'll leave it to others to mention that Chris Mullin's name was nowhere to be found on the official Warriors press release.
You'll hear me say at the beginning: "That's not true at all."
I was responding to Jackson giving me grief, saying I wasn't happy that he got an extension. I had told Jackson I didn't think it was the right time.

We're screwed forever.
You should stick to your guns, Matt. You were right on the mark with this one. This is the wrong move at the wrong time. Especially after signing Maggette.
This was not my call so dont blame me.
The ... "That's not true at all," was only that I was disagreeing with Jackson saying I wasn't happy. As for the move itself, it's not a solid strategic move for the Warriors. Period.

Panic signing Part Deux.
The thing that really bothers me is what sets Jackson apart in Robert Rowell's mind from all the other players he has lowballed/hardballed recently. Why is Stephen Jackson the only one to get a pass?
Jackson is a very good player. But the Warriors have no sense of direction.
And you thought I was bad
Jack has led a team that lost JRich, Baron, Barnes, Pietrus, Monta(injury), and Al (injury, malcontent) from the playoff rotation and lost some of Maggette (injury). He and Biedrins kept the team competitive in 9 of the 10 games this season. This is a great time for the organization to change direction and actually reward a player for his contributions.
You say the timing is bad....
Do you think its a move by Rowell to show he has commitment to the players and that the whole Monta situation can be smoothed over?
Matt, we're screwed for eternity. Please tell Rowell to just jump off a cliff seriously. I hope there is a bright side to all of this.
Flash forward....one year
Monta comes back and is one of the Top 15 NBA players we think he is.
To go along with one of the Top 3 big men in the game and top 20 NBA players. (Andris)
Anthony Randolph will start to push the limits of his 6th man role as his defense refines, he takes bigger steps than Wright did in his 2nd year, and he hits 15-18 footers with more consistency.
Wright will be in the all important 3rd year for an NBA player, those flashes he shows in the 08-09 season will start to become consistent.
Corey Maggette will continue to score 20pts a game and nothing else.
Behind it all is a veteran who is the glue guy, Stephen Jackson.
Good sign, for a team full of 19 year olds, there is no better veteran for those guys to learn from.
Good job Rowell. I for one see what your doing, why do we need to be apart of the 2010 FA signings, when we have 3 stars (monta/randolph/biedrins) in the making, 1 good player (wright) and the wiley vet (jack).
Why can't jack be like bruce bowen in 4 years? The guy who can play defense and knock down clutch shots every once in a while?
Who would you compare Jackson's game to now and by the end of his contract Matt? Do you really think he'll be THAT BAD?
Bruce Bowen will have made under $16 million for the last 6 years of his career when he completes this year and next, both of which pay him $4 million.
Rowell signed Jackson to be his Ginobili and bid against himself before finding out what everyone already knows: Jackson will never live up to this contract.
This is no Ginobili we just got stuck with forever. Latrell Sprewell had 3 years and $24 million remaining on his contract when he choked PJ Carlessimo in the wake of Nelson's last team ditch (the next one's on its way).
Jackson won't choke anyone. I hope.
He'll just suck.
Let's clear some cap. Maggette is expendable with his often injured history, lack of versatility and long term contract.
Maggette and Al Harrington for Jason Kidd and 1st round pick or 2nd
J.Kidd, Brandon Bass, 2nd rounder for Al, Maggette and Marcus Williams
There you go, Kidd is expiring contract at the end of the season. He can take us to the playoffs while we run with the youngsters.
PG: Kidd, CJ
SG: Jackson, Morrow, Belinelli *Monta when healthy,
SF: Buike, Morrow Randolph, *Jackson when Monta Healthy
PF: Wright, Randolph, *Bass, I'd love to have Brandon Bass
C: Biedrins, Turiaf
Good shot at playoffs, our youngsters get run and we clear cap space with Maggette and Al gone.
Maggette can be replaced by Azubuike and Morrow and more importantly Monta when he comes back.
Adam Lauridsen says what I'm thinking better than I do...
"Jacksons age doesnt worry me. If anything, he might be better in a reduced role as he gets older. Jackson reminds me in some ways of an aging Chris Mullin. His shot doesnt depend on athleticism. He doesnt rely on quickness to get to the basket. His defense is more intelligence than raw strength or speed. Other than a banged-up toe, he isnt suffering from any chronic health issues. He seems like the type of guy who could still be a significant contributor 2-3 years down the road, particularly if its only for 30-35 minutes a night. I also dont worry about Jackson playing hard after getting a contract or deciding that basketball is the perfect launching pad for his film/entertainment/media empire"
We can't trade Maggette now, wait about 2 or 3 years and we'll send him off, no one wants him now....
I agree w/ signing Jack. What the Warriors have been missing for years is leadership. We finally got that w/ Baron and Jack two years ago and its paid dividends in what should have been two playoff births.
If you think back, that last vocal leaders we had here were Tim Hardaway and Mario Ellie. You cant underestimate the importance of true leadership on the floor, from people who were born to lead. That is one aspect the Warriors had been consistently lacking over their playoff drought.
