Rob Kurz is Warriors final cut; Marcus Williams shouldn't celebrate though

Marcus Williams: Beginning the regular season buried

As Don Nelson was walking out of Oracle Arena late Sunday afternoon _ after the Warriors' blue-white open scrimmage _ I asked him if he was any closer to making his final cut.

"We're going to waive Rob Kurz," Nelson said, bringing the Warriors' roster to 15.

Clearly, Nelson wasn't happy about making that decision.

Conventional wisdom was that Nelson was weighing whether to cut Kurz or Anthony Morrow. But point guard Marcus Williams was very much on the chopping block, too.

Williams' guaranteed contract obviously factored into the Warriors' decision.

But just because Williams made the team, doesn't mean he's got any kind of role for Nellie.

Williams is still way, way, way off Nelson's radar. That was obvious from the continuation of by brief conversation with Nelson on his way out the door.

I said to Nelson: "It looked like Marcus Williams did OK out there tonight."

Responded Nelson: "Why, because he made some shots?"

"Well, he also seemed to do some pretty good point guard things," I said.

"You're seeing something very different from me then," Nelson said, as he left.

Sorry, Marcus, I tried.

More from the scrimmage:

Monta Ellis made an appearance on Sunday without his scooter. Instead, he was on regular crutches.

♦ ♦ Anthony Randolph is going to be good, but right now, he can't shoot even a little bit.

♦ ♦ ♦ Nelson was miked up for the first part of practice, and after a Stephen Jackson miscue said: "That guy could lead the league in turnovers. He's very proud of his turnovers."

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Corey Maggette didn't practice or play because of a right hamstring injury. He didn't arrive onto the floor at Oracle Arena until 15 minutes after the workout started.

Because he wasn't there, Maggette didn't get introduced to the 4,000 or so fans at the arena like the rest of his teammates, the coaches and team staff did.

Man, this is gonna be a tough year :( I already miss JR and Baron in the backcourt.. Watching Jack trying to make something happen at the end of the shotclock is SOOOOOO painful :( And we will see it A LOT this year.

I wish I knew the real reason why Nellie hates Marcus. You swear he must have kicked his dog lucky or something. Is not a likable guy? Does he think he's better than he is and that rubs Nellie the wrong way? I don't get it.

Marucs did well tonite, I think Marcus is becoming the brandan wright and POB of last season. He was driving the lane and making a good share of his shots. he scored 22-24 pts and thats a good number to me. Although, Ive seen parts where he could have passed the ball, but opted to shooting it against two defenders. He obviously needs to work on his passing skills. He doesn't pass well for a pass first pg. The best part of the nite was SJax poster on Randolph. I guess the old guy still got some hops in him.

That kind of response can't be good for Williams. Nellie really doesn't like this kid, I'm surprised by his response. What does he see that we don't? Even when the guy is knocking down shots, he gets no praise. It must be a defensive problem and him not being able to gaurd people.

    From Geoff Lepper at 48minutes.net:

Marcus Williams went off for the second team in the Blue-White scrimmage, scoring a team-high 24 points for the Warriors’ reserves, 16 in the third quarter alone. But he also showed exactly why fellow rookie DeMarcus Nelson has jumped so far ahead of him on the Golden State depth chart: Despite getting explicit instructions from White team coach Sidney Moncrief to duck under opposing screens, Williams kept getting picked off with ease, leaving the man he was covering plenty of room to wreak havoc.

Nelson, on the other hand, consistently went over the top of screens with success, something the Warriors have been lacking at the point guard position for a long while, at least on a consistent basis.

Nothing seems to bother The Don more about a player on the court than poor defensive execution.

petaluman, thats typical Nellie. Choosing ONE player to be strict with on defense but ignoring everyone else's defensive shortcomings. There aren't any lockdown defenders on this team. MWill just happens to be the whipping boy this year. I find that lame.

We gotta trust Nellie's judgement but Marcus can't be this bad? Worse than CJ Watson? Nellie didnt like this kid from the "get go". This is proving to be Mully's guy and Marcus might be leaving right behind him
