Mullin appears out of the loop as Warriors talk contract extension with Stephen Jackson

Warriors owner Chris Cohan and team president Robert Rowell

Wait a minute. Something doesn’t add up.

During the Warriors' media day on Friday, Stephen Jackson addressed the issue of a possible contract extension.

He said to more than a dozen reporters, among other things, that he had had some talks with “Bobby and them.”

“Bobby,” of course, is Robert Rowell, team president.

Later, Jackson mentioned “Bobby” again, said he had a good relationship with him and that he thought he’d be “taken care of.”

Jackson then mentioned “Bobby” again (No. 3), only this time he also brought up Warriors’ owner Chris Cohan’s name, and said he had “confidence” in both of them.

Chris Mullin: On final year of contract

By Jackson’s tone, it sure seemed reasonable that there had been dialogue between his agent and the Warriors. Fair enough.

Except Jackson doesn’t have an agent. He said he fired Dan Fegan a year or so ago.

So when Jackson said “he” had talks with Bobby, apparently he really meant it. Jackson had talks with Rowell, and it sounds like even Cohan, too.

On Saturday, when Mullin was asked about a possible extension for Jackson, he brushed it off and said he doesn’t comment on that stuff.

On Sunday, after the Warriors’ morning practice, Jackson was again optimistic about his chances for a contract extension.

When Jackson was asked about Mullin’s negotiating style, he said he hadn’t dealt with Mullin _ only with Rowell and Cohan.

Stephen Jackson: In it for the long haul?

That would seem to mean one of only two things: Something's not quite right with Jackson's story or the Warriors are considering giving Jackson a contract extension and Mullin, the top man in the basketball operations department, isn’t in on it.

A Warriors spokesman, citing team policy, said Rowell doesn’t comment on contract issues.

This, of course, wouldn’t seem to bode well for Mullin, who is entering the final year of his contract. On Thursday he said he was not disappointed the Warriors hadn’t approached him with extension talk.

With Baron Davis gone and Monta Ellis out for a while, the Warriors are looking at a challenging season on the court.

Might be a challenging year in the front office, too.
