Review: Gluten free Cherry Blossom Cakes

Courtesy of Molly Evans

Are you looking for a great gluten free birthday cake, wedding cake, or cupcake in the DC area? Cherry Blossom Cakes makes a variety of gluten free cakes and some cakes can also be made casein free upon request. They can also be made corn free. Molly Evans bakes the cakes from her home, where she is very careful about cross contamination because her 5 year old son has celiac disease.

Molly Evans from Cherry Blossom Cakes was the vendor at the DC celiac meeting on May 16. She bought samples of her gluten free mini cupcakes. The cupcakes were delicious. Everyone seemed to enjoy them, especially the boy who kept going back for more. Susan Flinn, chair of the DC celiac support group, shared a story about her husband, who eats gluten, attending the gluten free cooking spree with her. He sampled all the food at the cooking spree and declared Cherry Blossom Cakes as his favorite. Susan’s favorite cupcake was Molly’s chocolate cupcake.

The carrot cake with the cream cheese frosting was fantastic. The cream cheese frosting was prefect and not too sweet. The carrot cake does contain nuts. The vanilla buttercream icing on the yellow cake was wonderful and sweet. This is the frosting you remember eating on gluten birthday cakes. Molly is a skilled cake decorator, as the pictures indicate. She likes to watch “Ace of Cakes” and even learned some tricks from watching it. The penguin cake she had on display was adorable. Here is a quote from Molly Evans.

“I’ve always loved to make elaborate birthday cakes for my kids and nieces and nephews and party guests would say I should do it for a living. I didn't think twice about that until I realized how difficult it is to find cute and tasty stuff for gluten free kids (and adults!) I made a gluten free wedding cake last summer for a friend whose maid of honor has celiac and it turned out that all the wedding guests preferred my cake to the gluten cake the bride got as “emergency backup”. Then I decided that maybe I’d try this for real!”

A complete list of flavors and prices is available on the website. The cake flavors are chocolate, yellow, carrot, and coconut, and there are many flavors of frosting. The cakes are made from a blend of brown rice flour, tapioca flour, and potato starch. Here is a quote from the flyer.

“We love to make your kids’ eyes light up with the cake of their dreams! We’ve done pirate ships, flower gardens, skyscrapers, monkeys, train stations—we’d love to hear what you have in mind. Shaped cakes begin at $65.”

Molly delivers the cakes in the DC metro area. She needs at least a week notice for a regular cake and several weeks notice for a very detailed shaped cake. Of course, for a wedding more notice is necessary to ensure Molly is available. For more great reviews about Cherry Blossom Cakes, read the testimonials section on the website.
