Moo Goo Gai Pan (ordered without mushrooms and water chestnuts) served on a gluten free plate
When first diagnosed with celiac disease, many people are surprised to learn that soy sauce contains wheat and how easily cross-contamination can occur in restaurants. Fortunately, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro has a dedicated part of the kitchen they use to prepare gluten free food. Furthermore, they serve the gluten free food on dedicated plates that look different than their standard all white plates. Seeing P.F. Chang’s printed on the plate is confirmation that the food is indeed gluten free.
Ordering at PF Chang’s is easy. There is no need to ask for the manager or give special instructions about how to safely cook the food. The sauces on the table are not gluten free, but gluten free soy sauce can be requested. Instead of sharing a large bowl of rice with others who eat gluten, request an individual bowl of rice to avoid cross-contamination at the table.
Portions are large at P.F. Chang’s. Gluten free diners can start with the Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps and/or Egg Drop soup. There are many gluten free dishes. The chicken, shrimp, and vegetables in the Moo Goo Gai Pan are cooked perfectly. The new gluten free fried rice is a great addition to the menu. The Singapore Street Noodles are delicious and can be ordered mild. Vegetarians will enjoy the Buddha’s Feast.
Most gluten free dishes are the same price at lunch and dinner. However, the Moo Goo Gai Pan and the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce are cheaper at lunch and include Egg Drop soup. Although it is unlikely that diners will have room for dessert, P.F. Chang’s offers a gluten free chocolate dome. Of course, the fortune cookies are not gluten free.
The gluten free menu does not currently contain any beef, pork, or lamb dishes or spring rolls. To find a location and register for the discount warrior card, visit the P.F. Chang’s website. In the DC area, P.F. Chang’s is located in North Bethesda, Columbia, Tyson’s Corner, Arlington, and Fairfax.
