Emerald City Smoothie, located on Century Drive on Bend's Westside, is owned by Jon and Shay Frazier. Shay was diagnosed with Celiac disease about 3-1/2 years ago and as a result, they've worked extremely hard to make this shop as allergy friendly as possible. It should be noted, that Emerald City Smoothie is a franchise based out of Seattle with 64 stores, mostly in the Western US, and not all are as Celiac friendly as this particular location. This store, which exemplifies health, is a popular stop for athletes as well as anyone looking for a healthy, refreshing, nutritionally charged snack, and for good reason. In addition to offering a wide variety of smoothies, you can also find other gluten free options such as protein bars & powders, protein chips and electrolyte replacements.
While there is gluten in the facility, they take great care to help minimize cross-contamination and can accomodate most special diet requests. All milks, powders and other ingredients are separated and each smoothie is made with its own equipment (scoops, blenders, etc), which is washed after every smoothie made. The smoothies can be made with just about any milk (cow, soy, rice) and they have multiple choices of protein powder. And, if you have a peanut allergy, they take even greater care. They have a dedicated peanut-free blender and it is washed separately from everything else. If you have additional food allergies or intolerances just let the staff know, they are happy to help. I've found the staff to be extremely friendly and very educated on food allergies in general.
The average price for a smoothie is $3.95, but they can go as high as $6.00 (which, by the way is what my Very Berry Vega Protein smoothie cost...but it was so worth it!) To save some money, rather than start your day with a boring old coffee, you can grab one of these nutritional power-houses during their Smoothie Happy Hour (M-F between 7a & 9a) and get any 24 oz smoothie for only $3.95.
