On July 28, 2010 food distributor Bay Valley Foods of Westchester, Illinois issued a voluntary recall for 10.5 oz cans of their Chef’s Cupboard Chicken with Rice Soup. According to the initial press release, some cans of the soup may have been accidentally mislabeled and may actually contain Vegetarian Vegetable Soup. The mislabeled product does contain undeclared wheat and egg.
The company issued this voluntary recall after a consumer complaint revealed the mislabeled soup. No adverse reactions have been reported as yet and Bay Valley Foods has been working in conjunction with the FDA and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network to get the recall publicized. People with a medical condition affected by the presence of eggs or wheat in their food, such as allergy or celiac disease (in the case of gluten contamination), may run the risk of serious or life-threatening reaction if this product is consumed.
It is important for consumers to check the Chef’s Cupboard Chicken with Rice Soup for the “BEST BY 01 05 12” marking on the bottom of the can. The recalled product may have been sold through Aldi stores and may be returned to the store where purchased for a full refund. Currently no other products or brands are involved in this recall or are affected by this situation.
