Beer snobs beware, gluten free beer is here!

Bard's Gold - The Original Sorghum Malt Beer
Bard's Gold  -  The Original Sorghum Malt Beer

Bard's Tale Beer is a great beer which just happens to be gluten free.  This is no coincidence either.  The Bard's Tale Beer Company was started by two beer lovers who were diagnosed with celiac disease after discovering their love for a crisp cold brew.  When Craig Belser and Kevin Seplowitz were told that they could no longer drink beer made with barley, they tried their options and found themselves less than pleased.  After all, how does a man live without pizza and a cold beer on game day?  From that moment onward, they joined forces to bring the world a gluten free beer that can hold up against any other microbrew.  With this golden lager, they have succeeded in their quest and beer loving celiacs everywhere chant encouragement and pray that they continue their good deeds.

Why does Bard's Gold taste so good?  As Brian Kovalchuk explained, it is because they malt the sorghum the same way that barley is malted in traditional brewing.  Historically, beer has been made with barley, hops, water and yeast.  As any celiac knows, barley contains gluten.  The Bard's Tale Beer Company replaced the barley with sorghum.  This was not an original idea.  Others have tried this method and consumers can find those beers on the shelves at specialty markets.  Bard's is the only brewer currently that uses 100% malted sorghum to make Bard's taste like a beer should.

Currently Bard's Gold can be found in thirty two US states and two Canadian provinces.  Can't find it in your local store or favorite pub?  Their local Seattle distributor is Columbia Distributing.  Tell the proprietor of the establishment to contact them.  Or, visit the Bard's website and email the management; oddly enough, they will actually email you back.  If you know of a local craft beer or celiac event, contact Bard's with the information and they will try to participate.  CFO Brian Bizer and CEO Brian Kovalchuk make regular appearances at these events and are more than happy to share their story and their beer too.

Bard's Gold is tested regularly throughout the production and bottling process to ensure that there is no gluten contamination.  Bard's Tale Beer Company was formed by celiacs who take special care that their beer is gluten free and safe for fellow celiacs.

Actually Devilscanyon (*cough* .com) occasionally brews a delicious glutten free beer, it's probably the most unique beer you'll ever taste, but it's definitely beer. I should get the recipe they used, it was crazy interesting.

I strongly prefer Redbridge Beer over Bards. Redbridge is similar to Amber beers like Fat Tire. So if you don't like Bards, try Redbridge. Their website tells you where you can purchase locally.
