Crave Bakery, owned and operated by Cameo Edwards, contends that with the exception of their cheese cake, which contains dairy, her products are all gluten-free, casein-free, and soy free. At Crave, their mission is for their products to be so scrumptious that you’ll forget your cravings for traditional baked goods made with wheat and butter!
Prior to the conception of Crave Bakery, Cameo spent about 1 ½ years struggling with stomach issues, and sought the assistance from many doctors with no results. It was not until she had taken a trip to Thailand that she discovered that the culprit for her ailment could be wheat. After she determined this, she soon thereafter unearthed gluten as another offender. Although Cameo was physically feeling better once gluten-free and casein-free, there was still something missing. Looking at the options on the market, she was left craving all the yummy things she used to be able to eat. It was here that her journey began in experimenting with baking gluten-free, and casein-free. In the beginning, Cameo was determined to create delicious alternative desserts for herself. Consequently she saw the need for others was there as well, and decided to fill that need.
While Cameo was not classically trained in pastry, she was unwavering in her quest to create superior products. Out of this experimentation the perfect brownie was born. With raving results, Cameo and her first product in hand, her brownie, ventured out to her local Rainbow Grocery and approached them. The rest is history.
Due to Cameo’s cravings, she appropriately named her bakery. She began her San Francisco wholesale bakery “Crave” in 2003. Cameo feels that the reason her bakery is such a success, even in these difficult economic times, is because, “Since I live a gluten-free, casein-free lifestyle, I am my customer.” She knows what she misses from her former wheat and butter lifestyle and tries to recreate them gluten-free and casein-free without anyone being able to detect the difference. Cameo highly regards her customer’s feedback and what products they would like to see. This is continuously her driving force.
