Gluten free holiday cookies, part 1

It's around this time of year that celiacs (and others wo can't eat gluten) are prone to feeling sorry for themselves.  What with all the yummy smells coming from bakeries and workplace lunch-rooms filling up with taboo baked goods, it's hard to keep a smile on your face while saying, "No, thanks.  I'll just have grapes."  Well, I'm here to help.  In this article, I'll help you find some local gluten free bakeries and goodies.  Later, when you're braver, I'll give you a few recipes.

Main Line Bakery was voted Best of Philly Gluten-free Goodies in the August issue of Philadelphia magazine.  You must try their crispy chocolate chip cookies (never dry and crumbly) and Hamantaschen.  You can special order cakes, too.  Main Line Bakery's items are available in their store, online or at these locations: local Whole Foods, Food for All and Martindale's Natural Market

I met the ladies of Sweet Freedom Bakery, and I can tell you, they are as sweet as their goodies.  At this adorable shop, you can find cupcakes, cakes, cookies and (are you ready?) donuts!  All of their treats are vegan (dairy-free, casein-free, and egg-free), they are also gluten-free, wheat-free, corn-free, peanut-free, soy-free, and refined sugar-free. But believe it or not, they are NOT taste-free.

All of the baked goods at Sweetness Allergy-free bakery in Blue Bell, PA are free of gluten, dairy, egg, soy, peanut, tree-nut and sesame.  The cakes are wonderfully decorated and they come in vanilla, chocolate or marble with vanilla, chocolate, vanilla maple or chocolate chip frosting.  This insured and inspected home-based company bakes cakes, cupcakes, cookies, breads and brownies for special order, and they are beginning to sell their wares in the area (try Christopher's in Wayne for GF cupcakes and cookies).

Lots of great gluten free treats are available at local grocery stores, like Whole Foods, Acme, Wegmans and Trader Joe's.  There's no need to go cookie-free just because you're gluten-free!
