No, we're not talking about blue-haired ladies consoling each other over endless cups of tea. The Golden Girls at Brody's Bakery are so much more exciting. According to the bakery's website, Golden Girls are "The Un-Twinkie". That's right, golden, cream-filled sponge cake has come to Kansas City members of the gluten free elite, and they're not only gluten free, but vegan as well.
Brody's Bakery is already known for making delicious vegan and gluten free treats, but the latest offerings are nothing short of spectacular. Suddenly, a good many of the packaged cookies and snack cakes that had to be given up at the beginning of a gluten free diet are available and better than ever.
Joining Golden Girls on the menu are also Oatmeal Pies and Milano Cookies. People in the Kansas City area have an added treat to look forward to- Ice cream cookie sandwiches! The sandwiches are made with NadaMoo! "ice cream", an organic and vegan treat.
There are two flavors of cookie sandwiches that are gluten free. Enjoy Dark Chocolate/Java Crunch and Pineapple/Creamy Coconut. At this time, the French Toast/Mmmm Maple Pecan flavor is not gluten free due to the lack of barley free maple extract. (This is a bit hard to find, so if you know of any, leave a comment and let us know.)
The great news from Brody's Bakery doesn't stop at new flavors, though, there are new places to buy as well. Brody's Bakery can now be found at these three Hy-Vee stores:
- Leawood Hy-Vee, 12200State Line Road, Leawood, Kansas 66209
- Lawrence Hy-Vee, 4000 West 6th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66049
- Kansas City Hy-Vee, 207 NE Englewood Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64118
Those outside the KC area are out of luck when it comes to ice cream cookies, but can take advantage of all the other goodies Brody's Bakery offers by ordering online.

See, NOW I gotta come to KC for decent Junk Food! When I come, I'm bringing extra luggage to tote my treats home!
I will ask my local Hy-Vee asking that they add these products. I really would like to try some of these.
I am lucky enough to live close to a location that gets new Brody's Bakery goodies weekly so I get to eat them a lot and they are AWESOME! Even my picky toddlers gobble this stuff up and I even got my husband to eat some! They are soooo flavorful and wonderfully made that I cannot begin to describe it. The carrot cake w/ cream cheese frosting is my fave--it melts in your mouth!
Perfect! Now when I have my family over I can stop by an pick up some treats. Baking from scratch has just not been working out for me lately.
How can it be completely Gluten Free when she is using Oats? I don't know about you but I have been gluten free for 4years and tried oats again last year with horrible results and I know I'm not the only one with this intolerance in the gluten free community. Is the facility 100% Gluten free or do they process gluten there too, another huge question that needs to be answered in the gluten free community??? I will not be trying any of these treats simply for those reasons!
Christy - Not all menu items are Gluten-Free. I know for a fact that the baker Katie follows a strict Gluten-Free Diet, so she knows what she's doing. Additionally, many items can be made GF to order.
See the menu for items marked with * that are already gluten-free. All are Vegan, most are organic unless otherwise noted!
The review says " Here are two flavors of cookie sandwiches that are gluten free. Enjoy Dark Chocolate/Java Crunch and Pineapple/Creamy Coconut. "
Try those and anything else on the site marked GF, or ask if she can adjust it for you.
Happy snacking!
I have seen the products in the store and they only have certified gluten free oats in them. i can't believe anyone hasn't heard of gf oats!!
Christy- It's true that many people with Celiac and gluten intolerance also have a sensitivity to oats, but oats themselves do not contain gluten. Only you can determine what is right for you to eat, and if oats make you sick, then definitely avoid them.
Audiogirl- Thanks for the added information about Brody's Bakery.
Gluten free oats are very available through Bob's Red Mill. They make a lot of GF products so I'm sure they are meticulous about it. Too many people would have corrected them if not.
PS. Going to the Hy Vee tomorrow. Can't wait.
