The gluten-free Bloomin' Onion turns 1!

It's hard to believe that the gluten-free Bloomin' Onion is already a year old. It seems like just yesterday when Ashley (gluten-free dinner club member) and Julie (a manager with celiac at the Roswell GA Outback Steakhouse) joined forces and convinced the owner of that establishment to make them gluten-free coconut shrimp. At that time there was not a dedicated fryer there so the shrimp had to be cooked in a large pan.

The original batter was made from cornstarch which was very good but not exceptional. Cornstarch batter doesn't taste like wheat flour batter, of course. The proprietor of this Outback location is Tom Propp who does not want to serve anything mediocre to his customers. He experimented with gluten-free flours and products until he found just the right combination.

Once the batter was perfect, Tom started making things other than fried shrimp. Chicken fingers came next and finally the world famous Bloomin' Onion. After these creations were sampled by a few discriminating gluten-free diners, Tom had no choice but to invest in a dedicated gluten-free fryer. Needless to say this was a big investment but one that Tom has never regretted for a moment.

Tom Propp is a bit of a perfectionist regarding the food he sends out to the dining room so it was no surprise that he took time perfecting all the new gluten-free dishes for his expanded gluten-free menu. To date it includes -  Mac-n-Cheese, No Rules Pasta, Toowamba Pasta, Kookaburra Wings, Bushman 'Shrooms, Gold Coast Coconut Shrimp, Fried Chicken Tenders and the now world famous gluten-free Bloomin' Onion. Of course the normal gluten-free menu is also available and it's full of many delicious gluten-free selections, including the decadent Thunder From Down Under chocolate dessert. This Outback location even stocks four gluten-free beers and gluten-free buns for burgers and sandwiches - made complete with gluten-free fries!

As everyone in our community knows, good (and bad) news spreads like wildfire so the word got out about Tom's amazing creations and people started coming from near and far to enjoy the new gluten-free menu at the Roswell Outback location. There is a family from TN that comes down most every weekend and sales people that drive through GA and detour to Roswell to enjoy the delectable gluten-free offerings. Any night of the week you'll find multiple tables with gluten-free diners at them.

It would be nice if more restaurant owners and managers catered to our community like Tom does. He's really adopted our community in a way, and those benefiting from his generosity are we're more grateful than words can describe. If you live near an Outback Steakhouse and want to see a gluten-free Bloomin' Onion at your location, please post a comment in the comments section below. There is power in numbers so let's see how much power we really have. I must give a special thanks to Julie and Ashley who asked for what they wanted - and to Tom for answering their call - which in turn totally rocked our world!

Please bring the Bloomin Onion and all things fried to the Outback by Perimeter. We go Outback in Roswell about once a month but would go more often if I had these options closer. I don't eat fried too often, but when I do its at Outback!! The GF Bloomin Onion is way better than its glutenous counter-part!

Wow - Texas sure is well represented here but I don't think Outback is going to pay attention to 10 comments - let's spread the word and get as many comments as we can get so the Outback VIP's take notice.

South Austin Outback would be a great place to add this option. We have a Brick oven pizza place that offers great gluten free pasta and pizza. The pizza places around here sell out of the gluten free crusts so there is a large demand.

We wrote about this in Gluten-Free Living. We thought it might spread to all Outbacks once it was known how popular and helpful these gluten-free options are! Tom and Julie are great. Glad you are spreading the word about what they have going on at the Roswell Outback. Is corporate listening?

Yes they are...that's why we need a LOT of comments to prove that the Atlanta market is not an exception and many places can (and will) support extended gluten-free menus, as long as the proper training goes into it. Restaurant fryers are not cheap so things will have to change slowly - if they change. I'll post an article about your latest issue soon - thanks for being informative and insightful as always!
