OK..here is part two of my post on Nantucket in a meal by meal breakdown. We were on Nantucket for a total of 6 glorious days and enjoyed many meals while we were there. All were gluten-free and this Examiner experienced NO cross contamination or other gastrointestinal issues.
But first we had lunch on Saturday at Woodman's outside of Boston. We didn't know it when we went there that they had gluten-free menu and we could get fried food. Yes, you heard me right, it was possible to order gluten-free fried fish, scallops, shrimp and french fries, etc.. Only the clamcakes, onion rings and sandwiches were off limits. They flash fry their seafood, so they are not as 'coated' with breading and taste remarkably light for being fried. We dined on fried shrimp, coleslaw and corn on the cob. The shrimp was just wonderful, fresh and reasonably priced. Woodman's is a very casual restaurant where you order at the counter and then pick up your meal. The restaurant will be featured on Food Network very soon as they are very well known for their fried seafood and have become somewhat of a tourist attraction.
Sunday night at Cy's - at Cy's we dined on 1 1/4 lb. boiled lobster with boiled potatoes and corn on the cob. This is the traditional way that lobster is served on the island and it was just scrumptious. The corn was some of the freshest we have had this season and the lobster was perfectly cooked. This restaurant has recently updated its menu and had great food for reasonable prices.
Monday morning - I ate breakfast at the house every day as it is too expensive to go out and order scrambled eggs when I can make them at home. Also breakfast is the worst meal for me to eat out, as I always seem to get cross contaminated.
Monday Lunch at Provisions - we dined on a Chef Salad topped with avocado, a boiled egg, two types of lunch meat, bacon, veggies and a lemon vinaigrette. The salad was very filling and was made fresh and we asked them to change their gloves prior to preparation.
Monday night Dinner at Easy Street Restaurant - we dined on Lobster Rolls on a Canyon Bakehouse bun. The lobster salad was a little under seasoned, but the lobster was cooked perfectly. I made two open face sandwiches out of my bun. This restaurant offers a molten chocolate cake that is marked gluten-free on the menu. We didn't order it because we went for ice cream at The Juice Bar where they used my gluten-free cone with no problem at all
Tuesday Breakfast and Lunch and Dinner were eaten at the house because my daughter ran a fever off and on that day.
Wednesday lunch at The Downyflake - we had a chicken sandwich with grilled peppers and pesto on a Canyon Bakehouse Bun. The Downyflake is very well known for its homemade doughnuts and pastries, so I purchased and enjoyed Kinnikinnick Cinnamon Sugar doughnuts to enjoy instead. They serve breakfast until 2 and have a nice lunch selection. The sandwich was quite tasty and we put the bun on once it arrived at the table.
Wednesday dinner at The Lobster Trap - this is the first restaurant where I had lobster back in 2000 and it is still a favorite of mine. We dined on boiled lobster, corn on the cob an boiled potatoes that were just wonderful, fresh and tender. Slap on some melted better and this Examiner was in heaven.
Thursday Lunch at Toppers. This is an upscale restaurant located in an Inn. It is best to go there for lunch because it is quite expensive. We enjoyed lobster salad on top of a bed of lettuce. This is by far the best lobster we had the entire trip. Perfectly seasoned and cooked...we almost licked our plates.
Thursday Dinner at Cinco - they are very knowledgeable about the gluten-free diet and walked me through the menu prior to ordering. This is a tapas place, so we enjoyed seared scallops and risotto, but there were many other options that were gluten free from which to choose. They also have a great bar and wine selection.
Friday Lunch at The Tavern Restaurant - we enjoyed a salad topped with shrimp, pine nuts, gorgonzola, mandarin oranges and vinaigrette. It was a nice light salad that was packed with flavor.
Dinner Friday at The Club Car. It is recommended to make reservations at this restaurant, but we were lucky and got a table. I had Lobster Saute (lobster sauteed with shallots and flamed with brandy in a buerre blanc sauce) and they substituted quinoa for my grain since the dish originally came with pasta. They made sure to tell me that there polenta was actually topped with flour and pan seared, so it contained wheat and was off limits. This restaurant is now a must do for subsequent trips. Excellent wait staff, selection and knowledge led to the most extravagant and devine meal we had on the island.
Saturday Lunch at Something Natural - this is a must see if you are in the area. They converted a house into a sandwich shop that offers a picnic spot perfect for kids, dogs and is always busy. After you place your order at the counter you go out to their lawn area and find a picnic table. They make all of their own breads and baked goods (not gluten free), but have a great selection of meats, veggies, turkey salad, lobster salad and curried chicken salad and salads. We dined on a salad topped with curried chicken salad, which was a bit too spicy for me, but the chicken was very moist and tender.
Saturday Dinner at Corazon del Mar - This Examiner didn't make it to the location because the little one was not feeling well again. They have Latin inspired cuisine and are very knowledgeable about the gluten-free diet and had a number of menu suggestions for me. I chose the pork tacos in corn tortillas that were topped with grilled onions, peppers and avocado. They were just delicious and the guacamole topping on the rice and beans was smooth, creamy and yummy.
Sunday Lunch at Legal Test Kitchen at Boston Airport - this is the same company as Legal Sea Foods and they had a gluten-free menu. We dined on lobster salad on top of cesar salad with gluten-free croutons. There is just something different about eating at the Boston location verses Atlanta. The food is just fresher and better seasoned. It was quite a treat and it was our last lobster meal before heading back to Atlanta.
As you can see, there is no shortage of gluten-free food options on Nantucket. We left there satisfied and a couple of pounds heavier. We can't wait to go back and indulge on fresh seafood!
