Last year I wrote an article on History News Network about how General Dwight Eisenhower spent Thanksgiving Day in 1945. Ike was before Congress calling for food aid to help Europe recover from World War II.
What if everyone carried out a similar Thanksgiving mission this year to help those in need? If you have not done so already, you could start by making sure your local food bank is stocked so it can help the needy.
But then also take a minute to talk to Congress like Eisenhower did in 1945. Go to www.house.gov to find your local representative and www.senate.gov to find your two senators. Ask them to support the McGovern-Dole Food For Education initiative so we can build a global school lunch program. You could even write to President Obama at www.whitehouse.gov with a similar message.
School lunches were a critical part of U.S. foreign policy after World War II and it should be today as well. With U.S. leadership a coalition of countries can work together to make sure every child in the world can receive school meals. With over 1 billion suffering from hunger a global school lunch program would be a key strategy for tackling this food crisis.
If enough people wrote to Congress then a global school lunch program can become a vital aspect of U.S. foreign policy.
