Mermaids in the Basement (from left to right): Jennifer McLaughlin, Beth Whyle, Devon Barret, Tiffany Mallory, Jill Harris, and Sheela Fortner.
Mermaids in the Basement, or MITB, are local celebrities in the GLBT community of Hampton Roads. Firstly, they are an all-girl rock/alternative band, which is not an easy find these days. Their music can stand up to most mainstream rock bands out today. Secondly, every band member is an out lesbian. This puts MITB in a category all their own. These ladies do not let their individual minority statuses affect their careers as musicians, as together they have become one of Hampton Roads’ sexiest and most talented bands, and not just for a bunch of girls!
Their music has put them on the map and their upcoming album is sure to be a hit! MITB consists of six women: Sheela Fortner (Lead Singer), Beth Whyle (Bass Guitar), Jill Harris (Guitar), Devon Barrett (Drums), Jennifer McLaughlin (ASL Interpretation), and Tiffany Mallory (Violinist). These ladies are each talented in their own right, and through MITB they combine each of their talents to create awesome music and put on unforgettable shows. MITB will surely have you shouting “Encore” at the end of the show!
On Saturday, September 26, 2009, you can experience this band for yourself. They will be performing live at the Granby Theater in Downtown Norfolk. Come out and bring your friends! MITB will be taking to the stage with slam poet Andrea Gibson, creating a show that will be like no other. For more information on this show, click here.
