Transgender Awareness Week kicked off this past Sunday and spans from November 15 to November 20 wrapping up on the Transgender Day of Awareness. The idea is simple. This week celebrates that everyone has the right to celebrate his or her sexuality and gender identity. No one should ever live in fear of who they are. Sadly, transgender people everywhere are the victims of physical violence and harassment based on how they identify.
“During this week, we remember those transgender people who have been harmed by hate and discrimination, and we remember those who have been killed. But remembering is not enough. We will keep working for equality.” Says Lambda Legal Executive Director Kevin Cathcart.
Towson University will be holding a series of events all week, which will start off with Katelynn Cusanelli from “The Real World: Brooklyn” who will speak to students about transgender awareness. This will be held in the Potomac Lounge on the University’s campus. Tuesday there will be a panel discussion with trans-masculine individuals from Baltimore’s Team Trans.
Be sure to stop by the GenderBLUR extravaganza on Wednesday in the Union. Queer Student Union president Theresa Macheski describes it as, “generally a drag workshop where people can learn about the drag community and play with gender for a little while.”
There will also be a Transgender 101 workshop on Thursday at the University Union.
The week will wrap up on Friday in the Speaker’s Circle where students, faculty, staff, and community members will be observing the International Transgender Day of Remembrance to honor those who have been killed because of their gender identity. There will be a vigil and demonstration against anti-transgender violence.
