Jive Records 2007
The lead single off the new BackStreet Boys album is “Straight Through My Heart (Soldier Down)”.
The track is pop-gold. There is a feeling of freedom enhanced by the image of a picturesque and crowded dance floor, but also a sense of longing. As a good dance track indicates, there is room to get lost within the beats with hips to shake and hands to frail up in the air whilst still allowing loneliness to be questioned. In a crowded room with other individuals that are questioning life like everybody else, it is nice to be able to bond over the fact that we are all looking for happiness, and good music let’s that happen. As silly as it sounds, the type of songs like “Soldier Down” are the ones that you remember, regardless of their popularity or selling power.
Another alleged track on the album is “Bigger”. The song starts off with Brian’s vocals alongside a guitar, and once the first verse is over the chorus kicks in with a lovely-crescendo, a la “I Gotta Feeling” by BEP; you know, the type of background music that is considered up-tempo but it’s as lazy as a rainy Sunday morning. The song actually has a strong summer feeling to it, and it is both soothing and catchy. The lalalas make it even better.
Another leaked track is “Masquerade”, which out of the tracks so far is the strongest, and most-dance oriented song. There is nothing to say as to what makes it work, maybe just familiarity as it has been done before, but the point that takes it home are the strong vocals. This is something that has potential to be remixed to death, and that will be an enjoyable track up in the clubs. “Masquerade” is a transition point for the boys. It is not simple to label songs nowadays, and this is just what pop music is made of in today’s time. The person behind this is Brian Kennedy, who is behind Chris Brown’s “Forever”.
There is a track called “Hologram” which is as Kanye West meets Timbaland as you can get. It is also the most R&B that they seem to have gone. It’s catchy, it’s electronic, it’s dance, it’s bouncy, and as trashy as they can get. In a good way of course, they “bang-bang, shoo-shoo” our trains.
“What I Know Now” (“What I Knew Now”) is another great track that resembles stuff like Natasha Bedingfield’s “Angel”. “Shattered” is a slower track that starts with AJ’s and Brian’s gospel pipes, and carries on throughout as a great up-tempo ballad.
The BackStreet Boys’ new album This Is Us drops on October 6th of this year.
