Cleveland nightlife safety tips

With a stellar performance by the Cavs this year and the Indians picking up steam Cleveland’s party scene is in full swing. Summer is approaching fast and the feel good vibe that this season brings sometimes clouds our judgment and at the very least pushes concerns of personal safety to the very back of our minds. Protecting yourself and your posse every time you go out is just as important as making sure your handbag and shoes compliment your outfit. I will provide you with safety tips that can be applied anywhere you go but I will encourage you to stick with the safer areas to get your party on.

Tip No. 1 Party in a pack or at least in pairs. It is never a good idea for a lady to be out alone at night in a crowd of horny men and jealous women influenced by the effects of alcohol. It is a better idea to meet at someone from your group’s house and travel to the bars together. Worse case scenario if you do choose to arrive alone have a friend drive you back to your car and wait until you are behind the wheel at the end of the night.

Tip No. 2 Know your limits and know your friends. You should know before you set foot in the bar how much alcohol you can handle not try to find out as you go. Be suspicious if there is a guy constantly feeding you free drinks. If someone is buying you drinks make sure you receive every one of them directly from the bartender and don’t let anyone intercept it in between. Also stay sober enough to keep an eye on your friends and know them well enough to feel secure in the fact that the designated driver will be able to do her job. You should be familiar with the crowd you are running with so that you won’t be put in any vulnerable situations by anyone else’s actions.

Tip No. 3 Keep personal information personal. The club scene is a great place to meet and get to know people but don’t become anyone’s best bud in one night. Use discretion before confiding where you live, work, or go to school. Only show your ID to club employees not to guys claiming to want proof of your age or to see your cute photo.

Cleveland's East 4th Street Corridor

Through my own personal observations and the information I have gathered from others, I have awarded Cleveland's East 4th Street district my safety award. East 4th boasts the Corner Alley, Pickwick and Frolick, Lola and other swanky bars and restaurants. The area tends to draw a slightly older crowd than the Flats and Warehouse district so there is not as much riffraff. Also, the East 4th Street food and beverage tab usually comes out higher than the tabs at other clubs and bars. Those that are willing to fork over the money it takes to have a good time at Lola or Pickwick are usually not going to ruin their nights by getting into a bar fight with you. In addition to the clientele the fact that this district is “pedestrians only” eliminates the opportunity for someone to try and beckon you into his vehicle. And if anything were to happen many of these establishments, especially House of Blues employ massive amounts of security personnel. No party district is totally free from harm but I would say East 4th is your safest bet.
