It could be a long winter for people in all camps in the debate about the trial of alleged Nazi guard John Demjanjuk. The 89-year-old accused Nazi guard will stand trial next week in Munich for his alleged war crimes at Sobibor extermination camp during World War II. According to media reports, this could be the last trial of its kind.

The trial for Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk begins on Monday in Munich and according to Reuters, proceedings are expected to last through May of next year. Demjanjuk was living in the U.S. until recently, when he was deported to Germany to stand trial for his alleged war crimes.

It is being reported in the media that his health is declining. In previous months, doctors had already determined that 89-year-old Demjanjuk could withstand trial, but with some conditions. According to Reuters

Despite protestations from his family, medics have deemed Demjanjuk fit for trial but hearings, in Munich, will be limited to two 90-minute sessions per day due to his frail condition.

Two prevailing camps emerge from this trial, which may be the last of its kind—those who do not believe Demjanjuk should go to trial and those who do. Among the naysayers are Demjanjuk’s family and people who believe it’s wrong to drudge up the past after so many years have passed. On the other side are those whose family members were some of the 27,000 plus victims who allegedly died at the death camp, Sobibor with Demjanjuk’s help.

Polls taken earlier this year in Cleveland concluded that a good majority of people didn’t think he should stand trial since so much time had passed since the war. However, for the families of victims who died at the camp, it is seen as a way to bring justice to their family members after so many long years. Adding to the complications of this trial, it was reported earlier this week that there are no longer any living witnesses against Demjanjuk for this trial.

Why is it necessary to write "Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk"? What purpose does that serve?

It becomes obvious that the persistent use of "Ukrainian-born" proves that it is not just Mr. Demjanjuk who is going on trial for the alleged crimes, but also all Ukrainian people.

Should all Ukrainians start to make their way to the courtoom for the start of the trial on Monday?

fter all the ridiculous claims of atrocities ie. human soap, lampshades, that were found to be lies and all the holocaust memoirs that were proven to be hoaxes and the survivor testamonies that were found to be pure fiction why should any one be tried for the holocaust story. the red cross who delivered food parcels and mail to camps on a monthly basis says only 270,000 died of all causes why should we believe jewish journalists who consistantly lie about israel???

Slava, it's not a conspiracy against Ukranians; the stories mention "Ukranian-born" to distinguish him from most SS, who were born in German-speaking countries. To wit, the first mention in an article or book of Gustav Wagner, a high-ranking SS man at Sobibor, refers to him as "Austrian-born."
