Jobs in human resources and finance still growing

On MSN’s “25 Best Jobs for 2009” human resources, training and labor relations specialist is number four and budget analyst is number five. These jobs saw growth during the second half of 2008, which helped to put them on MSN’s list. At Georgia State University, there are undergraduate and graduate degrees relating to both fields.

Human resources may fit the personality of someone who is an effective communicator and able to handle conflict resolution efficiently. Characteristics of a person working in finance include someone who is analytical and has accounting skills.

Human resource management (HRM) is a M.B.A program under the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. The job description for professionals who come out the HRM program under the academic profile is that they will guide the culture of their organization and help top management to gain competitive advantage by capitalizing on their people’s assets. The job of managers in Human Resources is to help set policy and practice in areas such as employee compensation, recruiting and selection, negotiations and labor relations, and performance management. There is also a managerial science B.B.A., M.B.A., M.S., and Ph.D avaliable for professionals interested in assuming leadership roles in organizations and industries.

Lucy McClurg, Associate Professor and Advisor to HR Programs, said what they try to do at the GSU program is to give students experience in the HR world through internships, special class projects for local HR departments and field experience and courses.

In the area of finance at GSU, a bachelors, masters, and Ph. D program are available through the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Students completing the finance program will possess a number of proficiencies including a strong technical knowledge of finance the ability to critically analyze and solve problems associated with the financial operations of a firm, and to prepare and present business reports of a financial perspective. Careers in finance are available in almost every organization whether small or large, government or non-profit, private or public.
