Top cornerback chooses to sign with UGA

Branden Smith, the top cornerback in Georgia and one of the top cornerbacks in the nation, chose to play football at UGA on Sunday night at the ESPN Under Armor All-American Game. Smith chose the Dawgs over Florida, Florida State and Alabama.

The commitment is a huge pick up for the Dawgs as Smith has been described as one of the most “electrifying” players in the 2009 recruiting class. He played on defense, offense and special teams at his high school in Atlanta, and UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has suggested to Smith that he might play all three in college as well. Bobo told Smith he could be “the next Champ Bailey” and the recruit listed that as one of his main reasons for choosing to play for Georgia.

Smith has a smaller frame, but plays very physical and should be an instant contributor at UGA. He is very quick and makes great adjustments with his hips that makes him a playmaker at his position. Smith said that all the schools recruiting him were great schools, but he chose UGA to be close to his family and because of the respect he has for head coach Mark Richt.

Look for the Dawgs to continue trying to add to more superstars to this class as they are already in good shape with numerous other top recruits from across the nation.
