UGA loses Dawg Asher Allen, as he opts for the NFL draft in April

Another Dawg is leaving the pound: Asher Allen, junior cornerback, is leaving the Dawgs to enter the 2009 NFL draft this April.

According to Allen, it was one of the hardest decisions he has ever made, but he and his family decided, as a team, that it would be in his best interest to forego his final year of college eligibility and turn pro.

Allen started a total of 24 games during his time at the University of Georgia. In addition to 141 career tackles and three interceptions, Allen attained a school record for kick off returns in 2007, with 28 returns for 690 yards. In 2008, he was named to the Phil Steele's All-Southeastern Conference Third Team, and he was one of 13 semi-finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the top defensive back in the nation.

Allen is following in the footsteps of QB Matthew Stafford and TB Knowshon Moreno, who, earlier this month, also announced their intentions to turn pro in April. Losing this tough cornerback—Allen actually played at least four 2008 games with a broken bone in his right hand—is another blow for UGA. But, visit Georgia College Football Examiner Kit Kitchens and find out more about potential replacements for Allen in the upcoming season.

Good luck, Asher! The Bulldog Nation misses you already, and wishes you all the best!
