The writing is on the wall for soda and other beverages that come in plastic bottles or cans. With consistently higher environmental fees to purchase even one bottle of milk, consumers are evaluating as to whether or not buying a non-essential beverage is worth it.
The good news for geocachers is: people are still purchasing and drinking these beverages. The better news is: in the summertime, they tend to be discarded with no thought to their worth.
Geocachers are encouraged to practice CITO, which stands for Cache In, Trash Out. Many cachers take a litter bag along with them when out on the trail. A better idea is to take another bag for recyclables! Unbroken beer bottles, tin cans, plastic water bottles, juice boxes (including foil pouches) and thoroughly cleaned milk containers can all be returned at the local bottle depot for cold, hard cash.
Why not inspire the kids to help you by putting the money collected from picking up these recyclables away for a special treat? A resident of Scenic Acres encouraged his kids to hunt bottles for one summer and ended up with a new motorcycle for him and new bikes for all three kids. Now that’s industrious!
If you’re feeling altruistic, many bottle depots will also donate your money to a local charity. Or, if you have an aversion to waiting in line at the recycling centre, give your stash to someone in line as a random act of kindness.
