Giant Hogweed can cause severe blisters and even blindness. According to the National Post, sightings of this toxic weed have occurred in Alberta.

Geocachers, as much as anyone spending time in and around woodsy areas, should take precaution. Be on the lookout for this extremely tall plant with an umbrella of white flowers. The flowers are the most volatile part of the weed, its sap oozing an acid that can cause immediate blistering on the skin and potential blindness if rubbed on the cornea. If out with children this summer, keep them informed out what to look out for and discourage them gathering ‘posies’ unless you inspect them first.

The sap from the Giant Hogweed is not immediately corrosive. If you think you may have come into bodily contact with the plant’s flowers, seeds, or broken stems, wash skin thoroughly with water and soap, if possible. If caching in a remote area, seek a river or lake to rinse the affected skin as soon as possible. Carry a water bottle and sanitizing wipes on your person while geocaching.

Because Giant Hogweed is such a threat, these weeds will be removed upon notification to The City of Calgary at 3-1-1 with the plant's whereabouts.

If you or a member of your group have come into contact with Giant Hogweed, contact poison control in Calgary at 403-944-1414. For severe burns, blisters or possible eye infection with the sap of Giant Hogweed, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Be safe and carpe cache!
