Where to hide a new cache to celebrate an event can be tricky. Sometimes the location is self-evident to both the hider and the person that the cache is hidden for or named after. Many dog memorial caches are placed in the dog’s favourite park, like Dawson’s Park, GC1WN8E by KinderKen. A cache to propose to a loved one may be in a scenic area or set in a meaningful spot to the couple, for example Scooter & Smiley’s Engagement Cache, GCH2J7 by Scooter&Smiley (she said yes!).

Where does one hide a celebration cache when it seems like all the good spots are already taken?

Be aware that caches are not to be placed within 161 metres of one another. This leaves plenty of room, especially in Calgary, to place a cache almost anywhere. With the scenic vistas from nearly every hilltop, a cache with a view should not be a problem.

Though not always possible, it’s a good idea to hide a celebration cache close to home. This way, cache maintenance can be performed at ease and the celebrant can keep an eye out for fellow geocachers enjoying their cache. If hiding a celebration cache for a birthday, like 50th Birthday Bash Cache, GCB544 by KayakBoy & StarfishGirl, introduce unenlightened family members to the game of geocaching by loading up the GPS with the cache coordinates and having them write a note of congratulations to the birthday boy or girl in the log.

One last note: a FTF (first to find) prize can often determine the theme of your cache. While gift cards are typical FTF prizes, why not start off your celebration cache with a bang and include a trackable travel bug (TB) with a purpose? If the birthday wish was to see the world, it can be achieved through a geocoin or TB. Put in one to travel for the birthday person and one for the FTF person to keep so everyone can share in the celebration with you.

Happy hiding and carpe (celebration) cache!
