Geocaching is the sport where you can be a ninja, a pirate and an explorer all in the same afternoon. If you have never heard of geocaching, think of it as hunting for treasure with a GPS. Simply download the coordinates from www.geocaching.com and make your way to the marked location. When you get there, you must move with ninja stealth to make sure that your treasure is not ‘muggled’, or stolen by curious on-lookers after you leave.

What kind of treasure will be found? Caches can range from nanos’, which are as small as the head of a screw, to large army surplus storage tins. Caches can even be waterfalls or rocks! The real treasure, though, comes from the unique landscapes or scenic vistas that the caches are usually placed in. You are guaranteed to discover somewhere you never saw before…perhaps even in your own neighbourhood.

Once your pirate booty is discovered, leave your code name, and exchange a small treasure. Kids, especially, love to discover the loot and trade matchbox cars or other similar toys. As an added bonus, some caches may have trackable geo-coins that you can move along to another cache. When you find these, go online to discover what their purpose is. You may find a coin that has travelled around the world!

After you log you visit online, sit back, relax and wait for the urge to explore another geocache to happen. Like eating potato chips – it’s hard to stop at just one!
