This week’s cache is an earth cache. It is denoted by a geode instead of a green box on the Geocaching map because there is no box to find. Instead, earth caches usually have you report back to the cache owner of the site of the cache. This cache is no different.

The Silver Springs Waterfall Valley is unknown to even some residents of Silver Springs! To celebrate Father’s Day, why not take a hike down to one of Calgary’s little seen treasures?

Visit the cache and follow the coordinates for the best location to park and access the pathways. Be very careful because the recent rains have made the pathways extremely slippery. If you are uncomfortable with traversing steep terrain, please avoid this cache until mid-summer when the paths are packed down and more stable.

There are three requirements to logging this cache:

1. Discover two types of plants located nearby. Even if you’re not an expert in flora and fauna, coming up with two types of plants in the area shouldn’t be too difficult.
2. Discover the type of rock formation in the waterfall. Again, if not sure, try Googling information on Calgary rocks.
3. Post a photo of you, your GPS and the waterfall in the log for this cache. This is standard practice to make sure you were actually at the cache site.

If you are unsure if your answer is the correct one, just ask the cache owner, Sleepy_hollow in this case. The owner can give you a hint if you’re completely baffled.

Other great caches to log while in the area:

Prairie Oasis, GCH981 by CanadianScout. Again, watch the slippery slope.

Tufa Waterfall in Bowmont Park by Red90. This cache is a part of the Calgary Parks 100 series of geocaches that can earn you an entry to win an Oregon 300 GPS. A DNF (did not find) for me on account of rain and mud yesterday. Check the elevation on this cache; it may help you discover it easier.

Happy caching this weekend – take an umbrella and dress warm.
