Missaskatoomina cache by Prairie Swan is a short destination cache thirty minutes out the SE corner of Calgary on the number two highway. Located at the entrance to the Saskatoon Farm, it is the perfect season to pick up a cache and enjoy the sun while collecting a pail full of u-pick berries. The Saskatoon berries, or in Cree language Missaskatoomina, are perfectly ripe this time of year. Located on the grounds are also potted plants and annuals for sale, numerous sculptures for your garden including gargoyles, and a wonderful café to fuel you for berry picking. Their ‘infamous’ quiche comes highly recommended. Prices for both the café and berry pails can be found on their website.
This is also a perfect cache to take houseguests that want to be entertained. Roaming the grounds at the farm are multiple friendly cats, a handful of yellow roosters and a very large pot-bellied pig (be careful, he snaps!). Fun for young and old, the sites make this a day adventure, even without picking berries. And, if you so desire, you can buy a pail of berries already picked for you along with lots of others goodies at their gift store.
With it being high season for Saskatoon berries, arrive early. Line-ups at the cafe begin about noon. The farm is open from 9-5 daily. And a little hint on the cache: it is the same colour as what it is attached to. Look for on an angle to spot.
