Hillclimber by Downfamily is labeled as a small cache on the side of a steep hill in Arbour Lake, NW Calgary. Experienced cachers know that a small container in a heavily wooded area can turn into a micro and this one is no exception. Many logs on this cache recommend taking a look from the bottom-up but top-down has always been this cacher’s strategy and the proof was in the pudding when it was found travelling the area as such.
Parking advice is given so that the geocacher does not have to walk up the side of the hill covered in fresh wild rose thorns. Unless the cacher is wearing long pants and covered shoes, the immediately spotted trail option is not recommended. Flip flops are not a good footwear choice for this cache whatever path is chosen.
While heading up the correct pathway to the cache, your GPS should guide you to your left. With tree cover, your GPS may not zero out in the right location. Take note that the cache is not on a tree within arm’s reach of the main pathway. You will have to go into the woods. Bring mosquito repellent. They are everywhere!
Not too much room in this camo-taped cache for much else besides a logbook, a plastic beetle and a small ball at the moment. A sweet container in an interesting location, though, might keep the kids interested enough without the tradeables. If there are any pin traders out there, this would be a cache for you to drop some treasure into.
Other geocaches in the area include:
Arbour Lake Surprise, GC20DXX by KinderKen. A wonderful ‘unique’ find to add to your cache list. Again, no room for tradeables but this one is just down the street from Hillclimber.
Butte Rocks, GC20CNT also by KinderKen. This multi-cache is only in two parts so if you’re proficient with loading coordinates on the fly, why not give it a go? Take an interesting rock to trade.
Have a great weekend and carpe cache!
