Cache of the Week is being posted a little early so that geocachers can capture part of the virtual cache, Calgary History Tour, while waiting for the Calgary Stampede Parade on Friday, July 9th to begin.
A two part cache located right on Sixth Avenue SW, the first location should be convenient to grab after you reserved a space on the parade route with your lawn chair. Have a friend watch your things while you quickly collect the second half of this virtual cache (west on Sixth Avenue from first location).
If geocaching before the parade begins, come early! The best route downtown is via C-Train. Prime parade real estate fills up by 7 a.m. on Sixth Avenue and by 8 a.m. on Ninth Avenue. Bring a cowboy hat, some snacks and your best ‘yee-haw!’ The Parade officially kicks off at 8:55 a.m.
Even if you don’t own a GPS unit, plug in the coordinates to Google Earth and you should be able to extrapolate the locations described in the cache notes. If you’re opting for this solution, best to wait until the parade is over before trying to make your way through the crowds.
For safety reasons, don’t send the kids ‘out on an adventure’ by themselves with the GPS before or during the parade.
Remember that most stores along the parade route are closed until noon, so plan ahead to be hydrated and hunger-free…or bring cash. The street-side vendors will be happy to have your support.
Happy hunting and a big Yee-HAW for the Calgary Stampede Parade!
