Gen Y women are likely to purchase brands they
discover through social media.
It's no big news that women talk about brands and products they love. But, how often do you do that through social media? Turns out Gen Y women are discovering new brands through social media, not just their friends they see every day.
PopSugar and Radar Research recently released results of study “Why Y Women.” Some of the findings included that Gen Y woman are nearly twice as likely as their Gen X counterparts to discover or try a new brand because of an online status update (42% vs. 22%). In addition 28% of Gen Y women are likely to try a new product or brand if it’s mentioned in a blog written by someone they consider “like me,” as opposed to 16% of Gen X women.
Gen Y women actually are less likely to try something mentioned in a blog by professionals or subject experts (22%) vs. the 28% of a blog by someone they consider their peer. Gen X women appear to give them the same credit, 16% likely to try something new whether hearing from subject expert or random blogger.
Of course the most popular way for both Gen X and Gen Y women to share product/brand knowledge secrets is over the phone or in person (78% for Gen X, 69% for Gen Y).
Interesting results, but how applicable do you think it is? Do you find or share product knowledge over social media?
I think the likelihood of sharing and following brand mentions comes down to the instantaneous nature of social media. The whole point of Twitter or Facebook status updates is to share what is on your mind right now. If you think your new hairspray is the best thing ever, you’ll make it your status. With our access to social media right from our phones, which are with us at all times, getting those updates when you’re ready to make a purchase or in that mindset is also likely. It’s also a great way to get feedback and do your own brand research. A friend of mine is interested in the Motorola Droid, so has been tweeting recently soliciting feedback before making a purchase.
Do you try new brands because of things your friends/peers are saying via social media?

That friend she's referring to is me! I have been tweeting about the Droid...A LOT. I might have lost some followers because of it ; ). Sharalyn, you hit the ball out of the park on this one. I've outsourced shopping decisions ever since I've been on Twitter. You know what? My tweeple are awesome, they're never hesitant about giving suggestions or praise on a certain product.
The only two brands I am loyal to are Starbucks and Apple. Everything else I put in the hands of my tweeps. Now, here's a call to action, since my tweeps are so awesome, can they band together and buy me a droid? Get back to me on that one!
Ha, it depends. I love techy things! I try to get the latest phone. I tend to research on my own. But if I want the latest tablet or laptop, I ask my friend. she is a computer engineer so there's no doubt she'll recommend the best. Great article! Where Is Driod girl? Jennie, just letting you know, you'll love it. It's similar to my HTC Hero Android & I love it! The features are endless!
You're awesome, so if other people pitch in, I'm in!
I like people who refuse to follow trends.
