Has Generation Y developed social networking into a Social Media Revolution?

Many people out there still believe that social networking is a fad, and that it, like so many fads before, will slowly go the way of the dinosaur.  However, many of the most recent statistics on social media and social networking would lead us to believe differently.

Erick Qualman of Search Engine Watch and Socialnomics has compiled a video of many of these statistics, and calls all of this the "Social Media Revolution."  He likens this Social Media Revolution to the Industrial Revolution, which changed the way the world works for good.

While it may not end up being social networking that shifts the world into the next great age, these statistics are fascinating.  Social networking and its ilk will likely have one of the biggest influences in all that comes after for a long time to come.

That video is eye opening! I kind of suspected much of that but to see it spelled out is pretty incredible. The business world and anyone wanting to stay connected would be a fool to ignore statistics like those. Times are changing! If you want to keep up, you HAVE to stay up on how people communicate!

The problem with the video is a lot of the facts aren't wholly there. When you check the source list, a lot of key wording was left out. It's visually pleasing, but a few people in the comments section of youtube have called out some obvious plagiarism of other videos.

The fact about 1 in 8 US couples married last year met online, was written by its source in 2006, meaning 2005, not 2008.
Also, 96% of Gen Y on social networks should really be 96% of *online* members of Gen Y. There are plenty more of the facts that aren't quite true. Though, I wish they were. The video is put together nicely aside from the lack of factchecking/accuracy.
