*UPDATED 15:39 CST* One person was killed after being struck by a propeller of a single engine aircraft at Beverly Municipal Airport this morning. Initial reports are that a flight instructor left one aircraft, a Piper Arrow, to assist another pilot whose canopy was stuck open. The 30 year old flight instructor from the Arrow stepped out of his airplane as both were waiting for takeoff clearance. He walked to the airplane behind him, a Piper Sport Light Sport Aircraft, to assist the pilot in closing the canopy. According to the airport spokesperson, he walked directly into the propeller of the Piper Sport. The instructor was pronounced dead at the scene by fire department EMS personnel.
When in motion, even at idle speed, airplane propellers are virtually invisible and have resulted in many fatalities and severe, debilitating injuries in the past.
Beverly Municipal Airport is located in Beverly, MA and has approximately 186 flights per day, of which 99% are general aviation and 1% air taxi service.
