Do you want to see what Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport looked like as a grass strip? Are you a fan of the BLT and do you love to watch the old Taildraggers crush the clover? There’s a getaway down in Williamson that has it all.
An hour drive south of Atlanta or a quick, 27 DME, hop down the 173 degree radial of the Atlanta VORTAC will bring you to the quaint Georgia town of Williamson and its crown jewel, Peach State Aerodrome (GA2).
Peach State sits on a meticulously maintained patch of fescue that’s home to a growing fly-in community, Candler Field Museum, Barnstormer’s Grill, an active EAA chapter and oh yea, airplane rides!
These are not your typical hops around the pattern in Skyhawks, were talking an immaculate Waco YMF-5 or a Stearman, for only $50.00!
If strapping into those open cockpit relics sounds too much like work, get a table outside at the Barnstormer’s Grill and enjoy a wonderful meal and watch the multitude of aircraft that the little strip draws daily, from Aeroncas to Zeniths.
Remember the old hamburger stands at some airports? A couple of tables, cash only, order what you want, as long as it ends in burger. Barnstormers Grill is a huge step up from those days; great variety, moderately priced in a comfortable indoor setting, tables are also available on the porch and on the roof, bring a camera!
Okay, so you got your fill of salad bar and Cub envy. Walk it off in the Candler Field Museum, just a hanger door away from Barnstormer’s.
Sprawling out over the southern end of Peach State, the Candler Field museum is built to represent Atlanta’s old Candler Field from the 1930’s. It offers a glimpse into the past with seven antique aircraft ranging from a 1918 Curtiss JN-4 to the 1941 Stearman. Cars from the era, clothing, and a few surprises mixed in mean each time you visit you’ll probably see something new.
The real treat though, the spot you’ll start and finish your day at Peach State with, is the collection of pictures and articles on the walls of the Museums’ vestibule. Hartsfield-Jackson can’t even be imagined as print after print shows the original Candler Field, as primitive as her aircraft, adorned with flyers and gawkers.
Flyers and gawkers! Come to think of it, not much has changed, See you there!
